A duty to the dead by charles todd7/6/2023 Bess Crawford is not an amateur sleuth, she is a nurse and the mystery she happens to stumble on isn't something she had planned to solve. Now I have only read two books, but I feel that the WW1 milieu and the characters are truly well-done. I think this series is starting to be one of my favorites. But then Bess learns that there is another brother, incarcerated in a lunatic asylum… But it has to be set right." But the strange thing is that neither the mother nor the brothers admit knowing what the message is about. She survived with a broken arm and since she can't work decides to travel to Kent to visit the mother and sibling of a dying soldier last word "Tell Jonathan that I lied. And, of course, I wanted to read the series from the beginning and lucky me I own the first book as an eBook.īess Crawford works as a nurse during WW1 and is home now after being onboard a hospital ship that sunk. I have previously read book seven in the series A Pattern of Lies a little while ago and I just absolutely loved that book.

Anticipating Beijing’s next steps requires a solid understanding of how the PRC sees U.S.-China rivalry in the maritime domain. Whether America’s sea services can prevail in this new era of great power competition will depend on how quickly and competently they can execute the strategy. While the sea services must be prepared to fight and win a military conflict, no putative adversary is mentioned, and warfighting is just one possibility across a broad spectrum of confrontations that could occur. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard must gird themselves to “prevail in long-term strategic competition.” This means confronting China across a “competitive continuum” mostly comprising operations short of war. Issued in December 2020, the strategy highlights China’s growing assertiveness in maritime East Asia, which is “undermining the rules-based order.” In response, the U.S. sea services’ most recent maritime strategy, Advantage at Sea, is very much a product of this new consensus. policymakers describe the new approach as “ great power competition” or “ strategic competition,” implying that U.S.-China antagonism is, and shall remain, below the threshold of armed conflict. has strived to better defend the country from PRC policies that harm American interests, from unfair trade practices to actions that undermine U.S. Over two presidential administrations, the U.S. American leaders have finally awakened to the challenges posed by an ascendant People’s Republic of China (PRC).

If that weren't enough of a surprise, it tells them that their carpet is magic: it will take them to any place that they wish to visit - over their dusty London streets to the French coast, to tropical islands and an Indian bazaar. But when the egg accidentally drops into the fire, a strange thing happens: out hatches a phoenix, resplendent in golden feathers - and very vain. A lovely glowing yellow, they place it on the mantelpiece to brighten up the room. When a stone egg rolls out of the old rug that has been bought for the nursery, the children think nothing of it. It’s a sweet & satisfying romance with characters I wouldn’t mind reading about again and again. Pick this book up for the romance and stay for the hilarious dialogue, relatable characters, and heartwarming family moments. What she doesn’t expect is a near-perfect match with a man she can’t stand that turns into an opportunity she can't refuse. Jess is ready to give up on dating when she discovers a new app that promises to find your soulmate based on your DNA. If you’re looking for a fun, heartfelt read to lose yourself in, this is your next read! Not only was the romance fantastic, but I also loved the other familial relationships––especially between Jess and her daughter. This book combines some of my favorite rom-com elements with the unique basis of finding a soulmate through science. A Christina Lauren romance + a dating site based on DNA = a match! Like with all Christina Lauren books, I devoured The Soulmate Equation in a day.

Sheldon wolin democracy incorporated7/6/2023 Wolin makes clear that today's America is in no way morally or politically comparable to totalitarian states like Nazi Germany, yet he warns that unchecked economic power risks verging on total power and has its own unnerving pathologies. At worst it is a place where corporate power no longer answers to state controls. At best the nation has become a "managed democracy" where the public is shepherded, not sovereign. But what if the country is no longer a democracy at all? In Democracy Incorporated, Sheldon Wolin considers the unthinkable: has America unwittingly morphed into a new and strange kind of political hybrid, one where economic and state powers are conjoined and virtually unbridled? Can the nation check its descent into what the author terms "inverted totalitarianism"? Wolin portrays a country where citizens are politically uninterested and submissive-and where elites are eager to keep them that way. Democracy is struggling in America-by now this statement is almost cliche.
